AC art experience 2025: David Lieser / Durch diese Dekade

At AC, we love art. Because we in architecture can learn a lot from art. So why not launch a new format: the AC art experience! We believe that art is worth experiencing anew every day—not only in relation to architecture.

We recently celebrated the successful launch of our new format with the opening of an exhibition by artist and long-time collaborator David Lieser entitled “Through This Decade.” Eleven of David Lieser's works, created between 2015 and 2025, are on display at our office on Ungargasse in Vienna until further notice.

It made sense to start with these works because we have a long history of collaboration in architecture and because the works deal with line, surface, space, and form. They bear a strong graphic signature; they are direct, clear, and reduced to the essentials. They can be seen as independent investigations of spatial conditions, graphic compositions, and color energies that can enter into a dialogue on equal terms with the discipline of architecture.

The works take us back to the fundamentals of our architectural work in an unusual way. They challenge us to see color not only as a surface, but in interaction with line as a spatial architectural statement.

Unlike architecture, the works have no practical use in the narrow sense; they elude immediate function. And therein lies their value: they enable an open view. A view that allows us to break out of the constraints of everyday life, the specifications, norms, building regulations, and schedules, and reminds us of what architecture is at its core: a cultural practice. An aesthetic way of thinking. A creative attitude toward the world.

The exhibition is an invitation to engage and discuss. It is a source of inspiration for our daily work. It reveals how lines can create space, how color can create atmosphere, how abstraction can give rise to new realities.

Art can show us what happens when we let go; when we entrust ourselves completely to the process. This can be a counterpoint to structured project work. And perhaps, who knows, this tension will give rise to new ideas. New lines. New spaces. We are convinced that we can learn a lot from art. Both disciplines share a common foundation: the exploration of form. And both depend on someone looking, engaging, and responding.

The artist himself is reluctant to talk about his work. "Art speaks a language of its own, it speaks for itself, and I like to take back the meaning so that I leave the viewers perplexed in front of the pictures. I want people to engage with what they see and thus enter into a dialogue with the image."

David Liser's present works play with human truths and statements, and they play with intersections, the overlapping viewing habits of viewers who recognize similar forms—foreground and background, line and surface, space, color—yet trigger something different in everyone along the tipping point between the abstract and the concrete, a “big game” with individual perception. A game that gives everyone their own unique Art Experience.

We would like to thank artist David Lieser for lending his works to this exhibition here at AC and for the successful launch of our new format. And we would like to thank the works themselves for their courage in embracing clarity, abstraction, and color.

About David Lieser

Born in 1982 in the somewhat small town of Bad Homburg, art opened the door to the world for him. At the age of 15, during a time of upheaval, he saw works such as the “Eierbrett” (egg board) by Dadaist Hans Arp in his parents' books for the first time. He was fascinated by the idea that plywood could be painted and turned into art. Since then, many images have appeared before his inner eye. They all call out: do it, make a work of art out of me!

In order to learn something useful, he studied architecture at the Bauhaus University in Weimar from 2001, with plenty of room for artistic experimentation. After graduating in 2008, the serious side of life began. With a brief interruption, he has been living and working in Vienna ever since. Architecture is also interesting, and when he does something, he does it thoroughly. His interest takes him from designing a three-step staircase sculpture to managing large projects.

In 2016, he noticed a void in his life, which was naturally related to the fact that he was so preoccupied with architecture that he rarely listened to the calls of his inner images. “This is not acceptable,” he decided, concluding that “creating works” was the most important thing in life. The artist was reborn and very content in his new studio. Everything is going well, with two exhibitions in Schleifmühlgasse, Vienna, in 2018. He doesn't know exactly what will happen next, but he needs a gallery, more sales, and many exhibitions. Because works want to be received and seen.

A game that gives everyone their very own kind of experience."
